Suspected gold panner killed in mine mishap

The Officer Commanding Ppolice Beitbridge, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, said Moyo’s body was discovered by villagers on Friday afternoon.
“He had visited his in-laws in Novhe village. On the fateful day, he went to Umzingwane River where he intended to dig alluvial gold at a disused mine in Zezani area. While he was busy digging, the walls of the mine

collapsed on him and buried him under the debris and he died on the spot,” he said.

The man’s in-laws became suspicious when Moyo did not return prompting them to conduct a search leading to the discovery of his clothes near the pit.
A report was made to the police and the body was retrieved and taken to Beitbridge District Hospital for a post-mortem.

“As police, we would like to urge people to desist from illegal mining activities as they risk losing their lives and prosecution,” said Chief Supt Chinhengo.
