Suspected mentally challenged man allegedly kidnaps baby

The baby, a boy, is lucky to be alive, as he was saved by a passerby who swiftly reacted after allegedly seeing Thandazani Nyathi (29), of 7958/13 in Sizinda throttling him.

The boy was unconscious and only regained consciousness in hospital.

The child stays with his mother in the same suburb.

Nyathi was yesterday arraigned before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboea, to answer to a charge of kidnapping.

He was not asked to plead to the offence as the court felt that two medical doctors should examine him because he allegedly has a mental disturbance history.

Nyathi, who was remanded in custody, will next appear in court on 17 May.

For the State, Mr Tatenda Dakwa, told the court that on Sunday, the boy left the house during the day following his elder sisters who were going to buy food from street vendors.

While he was walking, he met Nyathi who allegedly lifted and carried him to a dumping site along the railway line on the eastern side of the suburb.

The court heard that Nyathi allegedly kept the boy for more than an hour at the dumping site.

While there, Nyathi allegedly started throttling the boy, but was restrained by a passerby.

The boy was reportedly already unconscious when he was rescued and the Good Samaritan took him to the suburb and looked for the mother who then made a report to the police.
