Tafadzwa Dindi is alleged to have committed a spate of robberies and rapes at secluded places around Donnybrook Racecourse in Mabvuku over the past two years.
Dindi (34) who is of no fixed abode would reportedly pounce on unsuspecting lovers and hit them with a knobkerrie and iron bars before robbing them of their valuables and raping the women. On Monday Dindi pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape and four of armed robbery when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Memory Chigwaza.
He was remanded in custody to Tuesday next week. Prosecutor Mr Michael Reza told the court that on January 3 2010, Dindi was hiding in a bushy area in Tafara where he was waylaying lovers. He allegedly saw a 26-year-old woman sitting with her boyfriend in a kombi that was parked at an open space. The woman’s boyfriend got out to relieve himself and Dindi struck him twice with a knobkerrie and he fell down.
Dindi, the court heard, stripped the man of his trousers and stole US$110 cash before ordering the woman to disembark from the kombi. He allegedly force-marched her to a secluded place where he raped her.
Dindi ordered her to run away from the scene after the rape and she complied. She later reported the matter to the police. It is further alleged that between February and March this year, Dindi used the same method and hid in darkness at Donnybrook and approached 10 other unsuspecting couples on separate occasions.
In all the incidents, Dindi would allegedly pounce on his victims attacking the men with a knobkerrie and iron bars before stripping them naked and taking away their clothes, cellphones and cash. He would also rape their girlfriends, the court heard.
Dindi was arrested after police got a tip-off from members of the public.
