ZANU-PF secretary for local governance Dr Ignatius Chombo has urged Zanu PF bigwigs who lost in central committee elections to graciously accept defeat.

Speaking at the Zanu-PF Midlands Inter District Conference held in Gweru yesterday ahead of the national people’s Congress which starts tomorrow, Dr Chombo said the bickering that has been going on in the revolutionary party was healthy and would make the party stronger.

He said those that lost in the battle for the central committee slots should not feel jealous of those that emerged victorious but must render full support and accept candidates whom the people would have chosen.

Among the bigshots that fell by the wayside in the province are Cdes Francis Nhema, Flora Buka and Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.

“Arguing and competing is healthy for the party because we all have the right to an opinion. We must however do this in a manner that doesn’t put the name of the party into disrepute,” said Dr Chombo.

He said peaceful expression of difference of opinion helped to bring together diverse ideas from different people. “Disputes and bickering are necessary because we bring new ideas and debate on them. We must table our different ideas and opinions and collectively agree and pursue the most brilliant one. In English they say there’re no two words that have exactly the same meaning. When two heads always agree, that means the other isn’t thinking,” he said.

Dr Chombo said those who failed to make it into the central committee should not undermine those who won, but should work with those that were elected to improve the party. He said although the party had faced challenges in recent weeks, it emerged stronger.

Meanwhile, Midlands Province has resolved to push government and the party to immediately align the country’s laws with the new constitution.

“The Midlands inter-district conference urges the speedy realignment of the existing statutes with the constitution or creation of new statutes that are in line with the new constitution of Zimbabwe.

“It urges the amendment of provisions on devolution which are in violation of our need to maintain national unity and cohesion,” read the part of the petition.

The Midlands has so far raised $54,000 ahead of congress with $16,000 coming from the districts, $30,000 from the Midlands Development Association while $8,000 was donated by Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa.
