Swallows show interest in Moyo

Unlike most Zimbabwean footballers who have sought greener pastures in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, the 26-year-old left-footed defender who once donned the Railstars jersey chose to resuscitate his career in copper-rich Zambia.
In an interview yesterday, Moyo said Zesco had offered him an improved contract that he was yet to sign.

“I know many people might ask why did I choose Zambia but the thing is Zambia chose me and I have been enjoying myself there.
“Former Zambia international Mwenya Chipepo saw me playing at a park in Berea. That was in December 2009 and recommended that I should travel to Zesco. I had given up on soccer but I am grateful to Chipepo who identified me and rescued my soccer career which I had given up in 2007.

“The then coach, Fighton Simukonda, was impressed and I signed a two seasons contract which ended on 31 December 2011. I am happy that I played a major part in winning the 2010 title as it was my first season there.

“I am not aware if there are other Zimbabweans who have won the Zambian title before.
“Zesco has offered me an improved contract and I will be looking at it after coming back from Moroka Swallows where I have been invited for the second time,” said Moyo.
Moyo first went for trials at the Gordon Igesund-coached Moroka Swallows, who are home to Zimbabwe internationals Gilbert Mapemba and Oscar Machapa, in October.

At that time Moyo had a leg injury, which has since healed, and Moroka Swallows invited him for another trial spell that starts on Tuesday.
The former Railstars leftback, who played alongside the likes of Njabulo Ncube, Highlanders defensive stalwart Innocent Mapuranga and Kelvin Maseko, among others, is confident of making the grade in South Africa.

He said his dream was to play for Zimbabwe.
“Given a chance on any day I can play for Zimbabwe and give my best. I wish the national team coaches could spare some time and follow players playing in leagues like ours and see if we do not fit in their team.

“As for the trials at Moroka Swallows, the fact that they have invited me for the second time shows that they saw something in me and I will be going there to fight for that contract. I am confident that I will make it,” said Moyo.

Last season Zesco finished seventh on the log under the guidance of Masauso Mwale and they have since secured the services of Zanaco’s head coach Wedson Nyirenda.
Former Highlanders midfielder Kelvin Kaindu, who is tipped to take charge of Bosso, assisted Nyirenda at Zanaco, with another club and national legend Numba Mumamba.
