SIXTY-TWO pupils and two teachers at Amaveni Primary School in Kwekwe, were allegedly stung by a swarm of bees on Wednesday afternoon resulting in some of them sustaining serious injuries.

Three pupils and a teacher are admitted at Kwekwe District Hospital after reacting to the bee sting. The rest were treated and discharged on the same day.

City Mayor, Councillor Matenda Madzoke said the bees attacked the pupils and the teachers around 12 noon.

He said he arrived at the school about 30 minutes after the attack.

The mayor said it was discovered that the bees had stung mostly pupils from the special class.

“Three pupils and a teacher are admitted at Kwekwe District Hospital. Others were treated and discharged on the same day,” he said.

Clr Madzoke said a group of pupils at the school threw stones at a beehive on one of the trees and the bees retaliated by attacking the teachers and pupils who had to scurry for cover. Parents whose children attend Amaveni Primary School said the bees had been “camped” at the school for many years.

They said every year their children are attacked by the bees but it seems no efforts are being made to remove them.

“The school authorities are aware of the beehive but have not bothered to remove the bees,” said a parent on condition of anonymity.

Kwekwe District Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Patricia Mapanda, refused to comment on the matter arguing that she does not entertain telephone interviews.

“I cannot give you information with regards to that issue and I don’t speak to journalists over the phone.

“You have to come here in person so that I see you,” said Dr Mapanda.
