SOUTH AFRICA-BASED mining engineer turned writer, Godwin Sweto, is a man of many talents.
Sweto, who transitioned from mining engineering to literary arts, published two fictional books, “Here Lies the Truth” and “Kunze Kwashata Uko”, within two months.
With the help of seasoned filmmaker and versatile musician Caroline Chiroodza, also known as Caych, they have converted “Kunze Kwashata Uko” into a movie.
Its premiere will be held in the first quarter of the year.
“To be honest, I have been sitting on this talent for years as a writer and songwriter,” he shared.
“After publishing two fictional books within two months, I was applauded as a creative genius in literary arts. My field has always been engineering, operating in mines. I am glad that I have found my other passion.”
Sweto has praised Caych for making his transition into music and acting a reality. “For your information, I met Caych last year and was recommended to work with her. She has made my transition easier and remarkable. I will always cherish what she has done in my life.”
Sweto was also ecstatic after his book was converted into a movie. “I can’t thank producer Eddie Ndlovu enough for adapting my book ‘Kunze Kwashata Uko’ into a movie. This milestone means a lot to me. I will forever cherish this achievement.”
In another interview, Caych, who has created the soundtrack for “Kunze Kwashata Uko”, shared, “I have always been versatile, and I cherish every moment I had with him. I will always embrace him because he came into my life at the right time.”
Caych stressed that Sweto is now her songwriter. “In Zimbabwe, we don’t traditionally believe in songwriters, but for your information, I now count on Sweto. I have done the soundtrack for the movie thanks to him. I can proudly say that working with him has opened new doors for me,” she emphasised.
After all has been said, Sweto, whose novels were published by Royalty Books, has made history as a creative genius within two months.
Sweto is a published author of “Here Lies the Truth” (available globally on Amazon) and “Kunze Kwashata Uko” (available in Zimbabwe at various bookshops, as well as from selected agents in the US, Northern Ireland, and South Africa).
“Kunze Kwashata Uko” has been adapted into a feature film of the same name, scheduled for release in early 2026. Sweto’s two novels, published in July and August of 2025, have drawn parallels with some of Zimbabwe’s greatest writers.
His rich, humour-laden writing style has been compared to Dambudzo Marechera, and the publication of both an English and a Shona book in one year is a feat that may have been achieved by only one other Zimbabwean writer, Charles Mungoshi.
“Here Lies the Truth” won the First Runner-Up award for Fiction at the Phoenix Annual Publishing Awards, 2025.
Godwin has been nominated for The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards South Africa 2025 in the ZAA Outstanding Author of the Year category. Both of his books have been converted to Braille.
An engineer and entrepreneur with extensive experience in the global oil and gas industry, Sweto holds an MBA (UCT), a BSC (Eng) Hons (UZ), and is an alumnus of the Cambridge Institute of Sustainable Leadership (CISL). A member of the Institute of Directors (South Africa), Sweto serves as an Independent Director of Hippo Valley Estates (Pvt) Ltd and an Independent Director at One Gas Resources (OGR), which holds a 20 percent stake in Zimbabwe’s flagship Muzarabani Oil and Gas Project.
Sweto enjoys golf, hiking and cycling.
The latest addition to his interests is music, where his first composition, “Kunze Kwashata Uko” (sung by Caych), has been accepted as the theme song for the upcoming “Kunze Kwashata Uko” movie.
