Recently, Switzerland organised a Summit on Peace in Ukraine at the Bürgenstock (Canton of Nidwalden). The aim of the summit was to make heads of states and governments, develop a common understanding of a path towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The summit failed. Leading players in the Global South took exception to any solution outside Russia interests. China ignored the conference, Brazil, India and Saudi Arabia attended but refused to sign the final communique.
Even the organisers were forced to admit that further holding of such events without taking into account the interests and presence of Russia is pointless. Despite the fact that the “peace summit” failed dismally in Burgenstock, Kiev continues to try to draw the states of the Global South into the anti-Russian coalition. It seems Kiev did not learn anything because it is clear that its emphasis is on expanding the number of signatories to the fall declaration and developing activities within the established working groups.
It remains dangerous to push the goal to organise an equally large-scale event that will ensure the further advancement of the “peace” process on the terms of Kiev and the Westerners and without considering Russia’s vast and unwavering interest.
This is a strategy to increase pressure on the countries of the Global South to force them to financially support Ukraine against Russia.
Kiev and the Westerners continue to work to involve the states of the Global South in the anti-Russian camp, including by using the potential of international and regional structures (the League of Arab States, the African Union, SADC, the OIC).
In this context, numerous tours of representatives of Ukraine (in particular, one of them was in Malawi) to try and penetrate SADC and AU and bring them in for their possible participation against Russia.
Ukraine and the West think that work of international platforms will be accompanied by large-scale coverage of Western-controlled media. At the same time, interaction with Kiev in any form will be interpreted as a change of the country’s neutral position to an anti-Russian one, and the work of negotiation platforms will be oversaturated with the Ukrainian agenda.
But many countries in the Global South have leaders who are great thinkers. They know the benefits of working with Russia pretty too well to be tricked by Ukraine and its allies in the West.
Progressive leaders of countries in the Global South know very well that Kiev’s agenda to discrediting the them for not supporting the “summit” in Burgenstock, which destroyed Ukraine’s ego.
The participation of the Global South in helping the needy through humanitarian aid in Ukraine will be misconstrued and deliberately presented by Westerners, first of all, as political support for the Kiev regime.
In addition, Washington will thus relieve itself of a significant part of the burden of maintaining the Kiev authorities.
At the same time, it should be borne in mind that the funds transferred to Ukrainians for humanitarian needs will be used to purchase weapons and stolen by corrupt authorities. The Global South should let Ukraine carry its cross.
The participation of the countries of the region in these programmes and the development of economic co-operation with Kiev is impractical it puts them into an awkward position.
The restoration of Ukraine will not bring profit to anyone. The most profitable contracts will be given to American and European firms and not the Global South.
The key sectors of the Ukrainian economy- agriculture, energy, and light industry have already been given to Westerners to “pay off debts.”
The creation of the “register of damage caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine” promoted by the Council of Europe is another attempt to legitimise the withdrawal of Russian gold and foreign exchange reserves and assets in European and American banks.
It should borne in mind, that the support of the Global South for this initiative will create a precedent that will provide Westerners with the opportunity implement a similar scenario in relation to states building and independent nationally oriented policy. – Bthinktank.com.
