Bulawayo’s Chill and Gin event turned into a memorable musical experience on Sunday as guitarist Sylent Nqo and The Noisemakers Tour delivered a night that blended live instrumentation, soul-stirring performances and a celebration of local culture.

Held before a lively crowd at a restaurant, the event attracted a largely mature audience who came not just for the social atmosphere but for an appreciation of live music and storytelling through sound.

The afternoon began with DJ Kead Wikead, who smoothly eased the audience into the event with a relaxed set as patrons settled in. DJ Eugy later lifted the mood with a mix of nostalgic favourites and contemporary hits that kept the crowd engaged. When a scheduled DJ failed to appear, Kead Wikead returned to the decks, shifting gears with an old-school hip-hop set that kept the momentum going.

Event organiser, DJ Feel G, said the seamless transition reflected the professionalism of the artistes involved.
“A professional DJ understands the journey of the event and can read the crowd. Because Kead Wikead understands the sonic landscape of the entire show, he was able to bridge the gap without disrupting the flow,” he said.

As the evening progressed, the spotlight shifted from DJs to live performances. Datboifresh delivered a short but energetic set before handing the stage to Nospa Chekaz, who maintained the lively tempo with local anthems that had the crowd fully engaged.

Singer Bhila followed with a soulful performance, performing several of his popular songs and teasing fans with a preview of an upcoming release. He also gave guitarist Shekinah from his band a chance to showcase his talent in a brief but impressive solo.
“I’m happy about the performance and seeing people sing my songs word for word was amazing,” said Bhila, hinting that more music projects were on the way.

By the time Sylent Nqo took to the stage, the venue had reached full capacity. Popularly known as the “Guitar Sangoma”, he immediately commanded attention as he began weaving through some of his hit songs while displaying his signature guitar mastery. He also previewed a new track titled Falling, which is expected to feature on his upcoming album.

One of the most memorable moments came when he performed Denga. As the familiar melody filled the venue, the crowd joined in, singing every word and turning the performance into a powerful shared experience.

The night reached another high point when South African Afro-fusion artiste Phila Dlozi joined Sylent Nqo on stage. Their chemistry was immediate, creating a moving performance that blended spiritual vocals with intricate guitar work.

Their rendition of Ukuzama, a song about perseverance and hope, struck a chord with the audience, many of whom sang along passionately.
“In many cases, people assume audiences only respond to popular hits. But seeing patrons sing along even to lesser-known songs proved they were here for the soul of the music,” Feel G said.

Phila Dlozi later performed his hit song Ikhandlela, drawing emotional reactions from the crowd as the spiritual undertones of his music blended seamlessly with Sylent Nqo’s guitar. The two artistes embraced on stage at the end of their collaboration, a gesture that symbolised the growing cultural connection between Zimbabwean and South African musicians.

To close the night, Sylent Nqo returned to the stage with one of his crowd favourites, Huya, bringing the audience together for a vibrant finale.
Feel G said the success of the event showed that Bulawayo audiences are increasingly seeking more intimate and musically rich experiences.
“Last night proved that there’s a deep hunger for something different. We’re refining a hybrid model that respects the city’s musical roots while pushing creative boundaries,” he said.

He said the gathering was about more than entertainment, highlighting the platform’s role in promoting local brands and artistes.
“Our greatest victory is witnessing the expansion of the gin community, particularly the rising profile of Bulawayo’s own Matobo Premium Gin. This event goes beyond music. It’s about people supporting local products, local artistes and Zimbabwean craft.”
