Harare-based Bulawayo musician T3rry Tempo, real name Terrence K Sibanda, has paid tribute to late Bulawayo social media personality Talent Masuku with a song titled Talent.
Masuku died at Mpilo Central Hospital in May after becoming a familiar figure in Bulawayo through his outspoken personality and controversial antics.
T3rry Tempo said Masuku’s fearlessness and confidence inspired him to record the tribute.
“I was inspired to write the song by Talent’s fearlessness and incredible confidence that allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Yes, he scared a lot of people and caused havoc everywhere he went, but he still caused people joy and he was known citywide for his dilemmas,” he said.
The musician said Masuku’s approach to life taught him not to be afraid of embarrassment or public judgement.
“He inspired me to take the bull by the horns and go on life full force and fear nothing, and that’s the theme to the song, that I fear no one and I do as I please like Talent,” he said.
T3rry Tempo said he knew Masuku before he became a well-known social media personality.
“We grew up in the same neighbourhood when I used to go visit my Gogo in Emganwini. I knew him before he was locally famous and of all that I observed, I learnt the spirit of not fearing anything, not fearing embarrassment or humiliation,” he said.
Although the two never had a formal conversation, T3rry Tempo said Masuku left a lasting impression on him.
“He was a man of confidence and yes, we never had a formal conversation but I knew him. He always treated everyone the same. He was a threat to all and a danger to none,” he said.
T3rry Tempo has also completed a music video for Talent, which was shot in Harare and features clips of Masuku during his activities in Bulawayo.
The musician said efforts were underway to have the song played on radio stations and promoted by bloggers across the country.
“We are negotiating for a promotion contract with Bulawayo bloggers and radio stations to ensure that it is played across all stations in Zimbabwe and hopefully gets out of the country as well,” he said.
For T3rry Tempo, the song is a way of preserving the memory of a personality who made a lasting impression on him.
“Rest in Peace Talent,” he said.
