THE table tennis beginner’s course that was set to be held at Drill Hall in Bulawayo last week has been moved to Friday with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Bulawayo provincial head Josphat Ngulube saying the changes were necessitated by certain obstacles encountered at preparatory stages. “We hope to have a larger pool of participants on the new date as we’re embarking on a massive training of coaches. This workshop is the first of many planned ones aimed at empowering youths,” said Ngulube.
The one-day workshop is targeted at physical education teachers in both primary and secondary schools.
Facilitators of the workshop will include Prosper Jaya, the Bulawayo Table Tennis Association (BTTA) technical director as well as BTTA chairman Walter Ebineng.
Jaya said it was worrying that Bulawayo now lagged behind Harare and Mutare in table tennis despite having been dominant in the sport some years ago.
“We used to be the home of table tennis but now lag behind Harare and Mutare, who have functional leagues. We want to reclaim our lost status as the home of table tennis,” said Jaya.
He said the course would equip primary and secondary school as well as tertiary institutions’ coaches with basic table tennis skills to ensure the game is reintroduced at all these levels.
