AFTER narrowly missing out on two gold medals, karateka Tadiwa Yvvette Pondo is hopeful of an improved performance at this year’s Kwekwe Invitational Karate Championship, to be held today at Queens Sports Club.
The annual tournament will mark its 16th edition this year and is expected to attract a handful of athletes ranging from four years old to seniors.
Tadiwa, who won silver medals in both the 55kg kata and kumite categories at the same competition last year, said she is ready for this year’s tournament.
“I am ready for the tournament as I was looking forward to it since the beginning of the year and have been putting maximum effort into training.
“I am hoping for the best results and expecting a gold medal in my category, the kumite under-55kg,” said Tadiwa.
The 21-year-old from College of Open Hands dojo has had so much encouragement from her coach, Shepherd Ziwira, and believes her previous performances on the local scene will work as a motivator.
“I am glad that I managed to win a gold medal in -50kgs kumite at TESAR College Games and a silver medal at ZTISU Tertiary Games and this gives me confidence ahead of this week’s competition.
“I know the competition will be tough, but I am prepared both mentally and physically.
“The level of competition is a bit challenging, but I hope for the best and am also looking forward to learning more and making friends from other dojos,” added Tadiwa.
Dubbed “Best of Best”, the tournament has attracted some corporate benevolence from sponsors such as Energy Ncube Also looking forward to making a mark are Lucky Dube and Shayne Manyatela, who will be taking part in the under-15 boys category
