Day Run celebrations.
The tournament featured eight schools – Glen View 1 High, Roosevelt, Girls High, Kambuzuma 1 High, Eaglesvale, Dzivarasekwa 2 High, Tafara 1 High and hosts Queen Elizabeth.
Oriel Girls High and Mufakose 2, who had confirmed their participation in the event, failed to turn up.
The schools were grouped into two pools with Pool A made up of Eaglesvale, Mufakose 4, Dzivarasekwa 2 High, Tafara 1 High and Queen Elizabeth.
Pool B consisted of Glen View I High, Girls High School, Oriel Girls High, Kambuzuma 1 High and Roosevelt.
Tafara 1 High were the group winners in Pool A and they thumped Roosevelt 9-1 in the finals to scoop the title.
They had beaten Kambuzuma 1 High 4-0 in the quarter-finals and went on to overpower Girls High School 12 -2 in the semi-finals.
Roosevelt had massacred Dzivarasekwa 2 High 16-1 in the quarter-finals before beating Glen View 1 High 5-4 in a tightly contested match in the other semi-final match.
Zimbabwe Softball Association president Stonard Mapfumo said there was stiff competition in the tournament as it was being used to select the girls Under-19 national team to represent Zimbabwe in the Junior Women World Championships scheduled for Cape Town, South Africa.
“The competition was quite high and it was worth noticing that all the teams were practising fair play and were aware of the theme ‘learn, move and discover’.
“All the teams were geared up because we were using the tournament to select the team for the World Cup in December. All the girls would want to be part of the final team going to South Africa.
“The competition in the pools was high and you could not underestimate any team,” said Mapfumo.
