WITH excitement building up for the Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire’s World Boxing Council super-bantamweight interim title defence, organisers of the bout have even spiced it up after slashing the entry fees by 50 percent.
But, the reduced prizes will only be enjoyed by those who will buy advance tickets by Thursday.
Chiwandire locks horns with Mexican challenger Zulina Munoz at the Harare International Conference Centre on Friday night.
All is now set for the much-awaited showdown which had to be postponed twice due to logistical challenges on the part of the tournament promoters, Delta Force Academy.
Munoz is already in the country, having arrived in Harare on Sunday.
The historic affair, a first of its kind to take place in Zimbabwe, has attracted worldwide interest, especially given that the winner becomes a mandatory challenger for the main belt.
The cheapest ticket is pegged at US$10 with VIP and ringside spectators having to fork out US$25 and US$100 respectively.
However, those who will secure their way in advance will pay half the prize.
Delta Force Academy director, Clyde Musonda, revealed yesterday that they had resolved to cut the entry costs for the early birds. He apologised for the continued postponements which had put followers’ patience to test.
The fight was originally billed for August 27 before it was moved to October 1 before it emerged things were not in order.
Musonda, who is also the manager-coach for Chiwandire, said his boxer is in perfect shape ahead of the milestone duel.
“Our boxer is 101 per cent ready for the fight. We are taking this fight very seriously for we know what is at stake.
“The winner becomes the mandatory challenger for the main belt. We just have to make sure we retain our belt then get the opportunity to challenge for the main belt. That opportunity is never easy to get. We have made sure Chiwandire is mentally and physically fit for the fight on Friday,” said Musonda.
“All is not set for the fight. Those who will buy tickets early will have to fork out US$5 for the general ticket while the VIP ticket is going for US$25 with the ringside one going for US$50. Between today (yesterday) and Thursday, the tickets are available at Click n Pay branches, Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board offices as well as at the Delta Force Academy offices and also at the fight venue (HICC).” Musonda said Zimbabweans should come and witness the fight in their numbers.
This is the first time that Zimbabwe will be hosting a WBC-sanctioned fight.
“We just want to urge Zimbabweans to come in their numbers as we are really behind Kuda Chiwandire. Munoz has since warned the 27-year-old to brace for a tough challenge on Friday night.
