BULAWAYO Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo has urged residents to take an active part in developing the city. The latest census figures show that the city has the highest unemployment rate in Zimbabwe and what is disturbing is that more companies continue to close.
Speaking during the 71st anniversary of the declaration of Bulawayo as a city, Cllr Moyo yesterday said it was time city residents prioritised development and work towards the eradication of poverty caused by unemployment.
“The growth and development of Bulawayo should be every resident’s business. As we are gathered today to pray for Bulawayo, I urge everyone to play an active role in the development of the city.
We need peace, God-fearing residents and rain to address our water problems. We should pray for the upcoming Region Five Under-20 Games to be hosted by Bulawayo,” said Clr Moyo.
He bemoaned lack of new investors saying most great ideas from Bulawayo were being implemented in other parts of the country.
Statistics from the final Zimbabwe Statistics Agency report on the 2012 census also show that Bulawayo has 430,972 people aged 15 years and above, 64 percent of whom are economically active but a staggering 27 percent of them are unemployed. The national jobless average is 11 percent.
The data also shows that more males than females were economically active in Bulawayo and that most of the employed persons were in the services sector.
