FC Talen Vision tear-away winger Calvin “Kung Fu Panda” Chigonero wants to end the Zifa Southern Region Division One season as the top goal scorer.
The 21-year-old dribbling wizard scored a brace at the weekend when Talen Vision defeated Zimbabwe Saints 2-0 at Mthwakazi Stadium in Filabusi.
Astonishingly, Chigonero scored a hat-trick against the same team while he was still at Ajax Hotspurs at the start of the season.
He has now scored five goals against Chikwata this season alone.
The brace took his season’s tally to 15 goals, just four shy off the current top goal scorer, Stanson Khanye.
Khanye might fail to add to his tally as Quality Foods could not fulfil their home fixture against Ratanang.
No Quality Foods player turned up for the encounter amid revelations that the club sponsor has pulled out.
This gives Chigonero the opportunity to attempt overtaking Khanye and winning the Golden Boot.
“It is my wish to win the Golden Boot so that I set a record for myself. I am happy with my season so far and with two matches left, I want to finish on a high note,” he said.
The former Ajax hotshot believes that youngsters should be given the opportunity to play at the highest level.
“When the season started, I wanted to prove that youngsters can play in Division One and do well. So far it has worked. I hope my achievement this season will motivate more youngsters to start believing in themselves,” said Chigonero.
His coach Lizwe Sweswe feels the player has so much potential to be a top striker.
“He has quality. All he needs is encouragement to keep playing football because some of these talented youngsters tend to quit the game. In the event he leaves us he just needs to be in a team that creates chances and he will score goals,” said Sweswe.
Chigonero has been impressive this season. He has scored all his 15 goals form direct play. This has earned him a cult hero status in Filabusi.
Chigonero started the season at Ajax where he scored three goals before he joined Talen Vision and he continued with his scoring exploits.
On how he has managed to do that, the soft spoken player believes that it just happens naturally.
“Scoring is in my blood. It’s a gift that I have no control over. It just happens. When I am on the field of play, I can clearly see what I want to do and then execute it. I don’t know how to explain it,” he said.
Talen Vision will play Binga Pirates away and finish off the season against Ratanang at home. They are fourth on the log just two adrift of Arenel Movers who are third on the table.
Meanwhile, Binga Pirates will clash with Bosso 90 this afternoon at Luveve Stadium.
The week 34 fixture has been brought back as Binga are in Bulawayo after playing Arenel Movers on Saturday where they lost 3-1.
They requested the fixture to be rescheduled to avoid travelling costs.
In week 32, Mountain Climbers and Ajax failed to travel for their away fixtures due to financial challenges. — @innocenskizoe
