This is the first exhibition to mark the official opening of Tambira Galleries situated at the former home of the late director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Professor Cyril Rogers, and his late wife Betty.
The show will include extensive private collection of contemporary and traditional African as well as Papua New Guinea arts.
The exhibition will also trace evolving trends in Zimbabwe’s sculptors grapple with the dynamics of an artist’s role in the country.
Benhura was optimistic about the exhibition saying that it would open a new space in Harare for contemporary art by youngsters.
“It is basically aimed at giving the platform to upcoming sculptors to share their experiences with those who have established their names in the industry. However, the emphasis should be on the up and coming artists,” he said.
Benhura said the Dominic Benhura Foundation was proud to be associated with Tambira Galleries and Communities-Can-Do-It in establishing a programme that offers opportunities to talented up and coming artists.
A part of this programme will be the establishment of a residential school of art in a beautiful part of Ruwa just 28km from Harare plus the “Wild Tree Coffee Shop” at the heart of the garden.
Tambira Galleries are jointly presented by a local charity called Communities-Can-Do-It and leading Zimbabwean sculptor and benefactor Benhura.
