YOUNG golfer Tariro November of Chapman Golf Club continued his fine form on the course after he won the Matabeleland Amateur Golf tournament held at Bulawayo Country Club over the weekend.
The amateur golfer finished with a gross total of 217 points from three rounds to win his third tournament of the year after he was crowned champion in the Munhumutapa Strokeplay Championship and Mashonaland West Golf Union (Mawegu) Amateur Tournament.
The in-form November registered a 10-shot victory over second placed Barry Painting who had a gross total of 224 points. In the first round of the proceedings, November carded a score of 72 before going on to register a similar score in the second round which brought the end of day one’s play.
However, there was a change of positions going into the second day, where the third and final round was played. Position change, however, did not affect November who remained intact in first position. At the end of day one, Tanaka Chatora was in second, with a gross total of 150 points, six shots behind November on 144 points while Painting, who ended up securing second spot, was in number seven with a total of 154 points.
November managed to maintain his lead to win the championship after carding a round score of 73 in the third and final round of the tournament to maintain his brilliant form in the country’s amateur golf competitions.
After November and Painting made the top two, in third place there was Ethan Kristiansen who finished with a gross total of 224 points, equal with Painting. Kristiansen had round scores of 77, 75 and 72. He was followed by Chatora who finished with a total of 224 as well with round scores of 75, 75 and 74.
After Chatora, there was Raphael Jazi who had round scores of 79, 72 and 78 for his gross total of 229 points while Scott Lumsden followed with a total of 237 points after carding scores of 79, 76 and 82. To complete the leading pack at the tournament there was Absolom Phiri who ended with a total of 238 points after round scores of 77, 77 and 84.
Three more players finished with a similar gross total as that of Phiri and they are Kelvin Muchenje, Malvin Chiriminga and Leon Mushonga.
Apart from winning the recent championship, November is leading the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) Amateur league’s order of merit with 230 points followed by Panashe Mukumba on 194 points and Clive Muchenje on 194 points as well. Jazi is in fourth place with 187 points while in fifth there is Keagan Shutt on 165 points.
The other players in the order of merit’s top 10 are Michael Wallace (160 points), Innocent Mukumba (155 points), Lloyd Dube (138 points), Chatora (137 points) and Norman Mativenga (102 points).
Next up on the Zimbabwe Golf Association calendar is the FBC Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare Golf Club from the end of April to first weekend of May, which will be followed by Hillside Masters and Region Five Golf Championship. — @brandon_malvin
