Over the years many artistes have found the going tough in the local entertainment industry with great musicians like Amanda Sagonda, Elias Musakwa among others fading into relative obscurity. This can be the same scenario with the yesteryear musician Shepherd Kunodziya, better known as Taso.
The “Vaka Zimbabwe” singer used to usher revellers into merry-making with his songs. But from 2005, Taso’s musical career has looked gloomy and the showbiz industry plunged him into uncertainty.
Taso’s long absence from the mainstream music scene appears to be an indication that he has fallen on hard times.
In 2012, he tried to make a comeback by releasing “Wakanga Wanzwei?”, but it did not pan out as planned.
In an interview, the musician spoke of the challenges that affected his career.
“Music is a mission and not a competition. But, this adage however, in the country proves the opposite, for economic challenges have forced many artistes out of business.
“Promoters prefer to work with the same artistes without trying out others. This forced me to take a break and focus on my area of speciality as hospital equipment technician,” he said.
He, however, urged his fans not to despair.
“Many of my fans are wondering where I have been but I am still in the game. Music is a business and it is not profitable these days because of piracy.
“It pains me a lot that you sow but others reap. I will start doing live shows and recordings if someone comes aboard since it is too expensive to do it alone.”
Taso said he was earning a living by buying and selling cars, among other things.
A member of the fast-growing ministry led by Prophet Magaya, he is among celebrities who have found sanctuary in the church and is working on a gospel album.
