ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has made history after being appointed Deputy Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC), becoming the first Zimbabwean to occupy the influential position.
Mukuhlani succeeds Imran Khwaja, who has stepped down from the ICC Board.
The appointment represents a significant elevation for Zimbabwean cricket at international level and comes as Zimbabwe prepares to co-host the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with South Africa and Namibia.
Mukuhlani, who is also chairman of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA), represents Zimbabwe Cricket on the ICC Board and has been involved in several key ICC committees.
He currently serves on the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee and the Nominations Committee, while also chairing the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.
His appointment places a Zimbabwean at the centre of the ICC’s decision-making structures at a crucial period for the sport, with the global governing body looking to expand cricket into new markets while preparing for its return to the Olympic Games.
For Zimbabwe, Mukuhlani’s new role comes as the country prepares to host matches at the 2027 World Cup, which will mark the return of the men’s global showpiece to Africa after 24 years.
ICC chairman Jay Shah congratulated Mukuhlani on his appointment, saying his administrative experience and understanding of the global game would be valuable to the ICC Board.

“His experience in cricket administration, understanding of the global game and commitment to its development will be invaluable to the ICC Board
“Tavengwa has earned the confidence of his fellow directors, and I look forward to working closely with him to strengthen cricket across our members and create greater opportunities for the game to grow worldwide,” said Shah.
“His election is also a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, as he becomes the first Zimbabwean to serve as Deputy Chair.
“With cricket expanding globally and returning to the Olympic Games, strong leadership will be vital,” he said.
Mukuhlani pledged to support the organisation’s efforts to grow the game.
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence placed in me by my fellow ICC Board Directors and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Chair of the ICC,” he said.
Mukuhlani also highlighted the importance of working with Shah and the ICC Board to create opportunities for member countries and reach new audiences.
“Cricket is entering an exciting period, particularly with its return to the Olympic Games and continued global expansion.
“I look forward to supporting our Chairman, Mr Jay Shah, and fellow board directors in advancing our shared priorities and serving the best interests of cricket globally,” said the ZC chairperson.
