A TAXI driver appeared in court yesterday for assaulting a police officer who was assigned to arrest him. Khulumane Ndlovu, 32, of Njube suburb head butted Nyasha Chinyama, 29, of Ross Camp stationed at Bulawayo Central Police Station after he arrested him for parking at an undesignated area. Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Marylyn Mtshina facing an assault charge.
He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.
“Your worship, l assaulted Chinyama because he was pulling me using the handcuffs. I tried to tell him that he was hurting my hands but he wouldn’t listen,” said Ndlovu.
Prosecuting, Tawurai Hondoyemoto said on February 22, at around 2.30AM, Chinyama was on duty, patrolling along Robert Mugabe Way and 10th Avenue, Bulawayo.
“He spotted Ndlovu parked at an undesignated area along Robert Mugabe Way and arrested him,” said Hondoyemoto.
Chinyama took him to the police station and when they were at the charge office, Ndlovu became violent.
The court heard that Ndlovu head butted Chinyama once on the mouth.
Chinyama sustained a cut on the upper lip and was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.
On January 29 this year Jonathan Phiri, 26, punched a police officer, Cordian Maimba, 27, several times on the head, face and mouth causing him to lose his teeth.
Maimba lost his handcuffs during the assault and his police uniform got torn.
Phiri was ordered to perform 105 hours of community service at Mtshede Primary School in Njube by a Western Commonage magistrate.
