Teacher rapes pupil

Fungai Lupande Court Reporter
A teacher at a primary school in Epworth, Harare, last Friday appeared in court on allegations of raping a Grade 5 pupil he had told to sweep his house. The man was not formally charged when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing rape charges. Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira alleged that on an unknown date in February and at around 3pm, the man ordered the pupil to go and sweep his house and he followed her.

While she was sweeping, the teacher grabbed her and carried her into his bedroom. He gagged her mouth and removed her uniform before raping her, the court heard. After the sexual assault, he allegedly threatened the girl with death. The girl dressed up and put some blood-stained tissue in her school bag and returned to class.

On March 11, the girl’s grandmother went through the minor’s bag and discovered the blood-stained tissue.

The grandmother quizzed her and she opened up on what had happened.
