Teachers’ colleges optimistic ahead of championships

Track and field events will be held concurrently at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare while indoor games have been slated for 26 May in Mutare at the same venue.

Zimbabwe Universities Sports Associations (ZUSA) which comprises athletes from all universities in the country and Tertiary Education Sports Association  of Zimbabwe (TESAZ) made up of students from polytechnic colleges are the other participants in the championships.

ZITCOSA is hoping for a better showing this year after coming second at last year’s games held in Masvingo.

The teachers’ colleges have assembled a 32-member team to take part at the games which will participate in all nine disciplines  which are athletics, basketball, football  (men and women), netball, tennis, volleyball (men and women), tennis, cricket, chess, darts and table tennis.
Collen Daramachi, the ZITCOSA development officer is confident of upsetting the universities who narrowly pipped them for the top spot last year  saying they have assembled a strong side which includes the best players from all  the teacher training institutions.

“We are optimistic of posting positive results in most of the disciplines especially football because we selected the best players from all the colleges unlike last year where our team lost to the universities in the final. The team only consisted of Hillside Teachers’ College who had won at our ZITCOSA games but this time around we have selected the best soccer players from all the colleges.

“Other areas of strength are women’s football, darts, tennis and athletics where we have been the traditional powerhouses,” Daramachi said.

The games will be used to select a team to represent the country at the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games to be held in Windhoek, Namibia in July.
