TEACHERS at a Harare private school are under fire following a disturbing incident in which a student was subjected to a severe beating for allegedly uttering a four-letter word.
The students were returning from a school trip.
According to accounts from pupils, the altercation began as a verbal exchange between two students before escalating when teachers intervened.
Instead of diffusing the situation, the teachers turned on one of the students, repeatedly taking turns to strike the victim.
One of the teachers has been identified as Manyehwe.
Efforts to obtain a response from the school administration yielded little clarity.
School head Mr Munemo referred inquiries to the District Schools Inspector, Mr Kabasa, who in turn directed questions to the Provincial Education Director.
Attempts to reach the latter were unsuccessful.
The incident has reignited debate around corporal punishment in Zimbabwe’s education system.
