TEAM Bulawayo was yesterday given a befitting send-off to the National Youth Games by the public and corporate world at Kumalo Hockey Stadium. The team leaves for the games’ venue Mutare in Manicaland today with the event kicking off tomorrow and ending on August 23.
Bulawayo province is sending a delegation of 222 comprising 185 athletes and 37 officials. The athletes will be vying for medals in eight disciplines, which include athletics, basketball, boxing, handball, football, netball, tennis and volleyball.
Football and athletics have the largest contingent of 40 each while tennis has the least number of four.
In a speech read on her behalf by provincial education director Dan Moyo, the Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo urged the athletes to take pride in representing the province and return with medals.
“You are embarking on a very important ambassadorial role on behalf of our province so I stand proud that you are going to march past other provinces and bring home the good success stories and medals,” she said.
She thanked the Bulawayo Sports Board for ensuring that all preparations went well.
The board chief executive officer Raj Modi said: “I would like to thank all the management team for the team work that has seen us managing to put the team together under difficult conditions. I don’t hesitate to thank our supervisors, who include the provincial administrator and provincial education director, who are always on our side.”
