TEAM Zimbabwe’s training camp for the BMX African Continental Championships (AFCON) that will be held at Busters Cycle Park in Bulawayo next month has seen preparations being ramped up.

The Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) offered the National BMX Association of Zimbabwe hosting rights to the event that is scheduled to take place over two days on September 3 and 4.

Registration for cyclists will be done on September 2.

Speaking to Chronicle Sports, Buster’s BMX Club chairperson Rob Maguire said preparations for the continental  showpiece are running smoothly and they have been receiving donations from well-wishers.

Maguire believes with the amount of work they have put in organising and preparing for the event, it is going to be a success.

“We have had a lot of donations from citizens and everything is on track. We look forward to a successful event,” said Maguire.

This will be one of the major international events in the cycling calendar that Zimbabwe will have the privilege of hosting.

Maguire also believes hosting such a prestigious event in Bulawayo is a huge boost as it will help put Zimbabwe on the international map.

“It’s a huge boost for the sport, it will put us on the international map,” he said.

This will also be one of the few international events to be hosted by Bulawayo as most such events are held in Harare. Busters is used to hosting national and interprovincial tournaments.

Maguire said they are grateful that they are back after a long break due to Covid-19.

“We had no money coming into the club, riders were all out of practice but we are grateful that it’s over and we are moving forward,” he said.
