HOSTS Team Zimbabwe moved three places up the All Africa Golf Team Championships leader board after barn-storming second-round displays by captain, Micheal Wallace and his teammate, Keegan Shutt.
Having been placed fourth overnight, the Zimbabwe pair of Wallace and Shutt decided to grab the day’s proceedings by the scruff of the neck.
Wallace finished the second round tied for individual sevemth position after carding a three-under-par round.
The day’s action left Zimbabwe in second place, 14 shots behind favourites South Africa and five over third-placed Uganda who are five-over after two rounds.
Wallace’s round included three birdies but could have been better if he had not bogeyed the par-three third hole and par-four- fifth hole. The Zimbabwe skipper also double bogeyed the par-four- ninth hole.
For his three-under-par 69 second round, Shutt bogeyed the third, fourth and 17th holes but managed birdies on the first, second, fifth, seventh, 14th and 18th holes to finish strong for the hosts.
However, Manicaland native, Vincent Chidambadzina struggled in the second round bogeying the third, sixth, seventh, eight, 13th and 15th holes. The talented prodigy only managed two birdies in the round, saving a shot on the first and fourth holes leaving him tied for 11th place.
It was also a bad day in the office for Kelvin Muchenje who finished three-over-par in the second round leaving him with a total of eight- over-par after two rounds. He bogeyed four holes and double bogeyed the par-four 12th. Muchenje also scored birdies on the third, 10th and 11th holes but it was not enough to propel up the leader board.
South Africans Ivan Verster and Jordan Burnand top the individual leader board in first and second place, respectively.
Six birdies and only two bogeys saw Verster card a second-round four-under-par 68 to open a two-shot lead over his teammate, Burnand who carded a two-under-70 second round. Burnand’s second round had only two birdies on the 16th and 18th holes having made it through the other 16 holes even for par.
Burnand is tied for second place with Ugandan Reagan Akena who was one-under-71 with the only blemish being bogeys on the seventh and 11th hole to go with birdies on the first, 10th and 15th holes.
Overnight leader, Issa Amr Abou Elela dropped to fourth place after bogeying three holes and birdieing three holes.
Play continues with the third round with Zimbabwe hoping to whittle down South Africa’s 13-shot lead.
