Teams need another pre-season before season kick-off

THE outbreak of coronavirus has disrupted the whole football chain and clubs will need another preseason – a second one before the ball is even kicked this year – before the authorities can think about starting the 2020 Premier Soccer League, a football coach has said.

Football action was put on ice after the worldwide outbreak of Covid-19 and local leagues were not spared with the new season pushed forward from the April kickoff to a date yet to be determined.

Zifa has, however, hinted on an August/September kick-off, a decision that will be taken in consultation with Government and Fifa.

“It’s very difficult for players to train effectively when they are self-isolating and I have been in consultation with our fitness coach, who checks with the players on a daily basis but as professional footballers you would expect that they do that (train individually).

“There is only a certain level that a player can keep fit until they start training as a team and you push it to the next level. In my opinion, if and when the league is scheduled to start, they (football authorities) will have to give teams another pre-season. I think five to six weeks will be sufficient,” said the departing Highlanders coach Mark Harrison.

Harrison and Bosso agreed to suspend the coach’s contract with immediate effect until such a time when the league is ready to resume.

The Briton flies back to the United Kingdom on Saturday.

He, however, remains a Highlanders coach and cannot negotiate with another club, according Bosso spokesman Ronald Moyo.
