A TEENAGE girl from Sun Yet Sen in Kezi, Matabeleland South allegedly gave birth and threw the baby into a pit that had been dug for the construction of a Blair toilet.
The 14-year-old girl is said to have been sleeping with her relative when she started complaining about stomach pains. She went outside and gave birth without the knowledge of the relative and dumped the baby before returning to sleep.
According to a source, when the relative woke up the following morning, she saw blood in the room and became suspicious.
She then spotted a blood trail leading to the Blair toilet pit. When she got to the pit, she heard a baby crying. She alerted neighbours who reported the matter to the police. The baby was retrieved by three police officers.
The accused and her baby were taken to Tshelanyemba Mission Hospital where they were both admitted and are in a stable condition. Acting Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkosilathi Sibanda said people should desist from baby dumping.
“We urge people to desist from committing the felony of birth concealment and stop dumping their newly born babies as the law will take its course,” he said.
