A 16-year-old Silobela girl has appeared in court for stabbing her 17-year-old brother in-law to death, in an undisclosed dispute. The teenager, who was heavily pregnant at the time, fatally stabbed Proud Moyo in the chest in October last year.

She is nursing her eight-month-old baby in remand prison. The teen yesterday appeared before High Court judge, Justice Maxwell Takuva, facing one count of murder. The juvenile who denied killing her brother-in-law will know her fate today when Justice Takuva delivers his judgement.

In her defence, the juvenile told Justice Takuva that she only acted in self-defence after Moyo tried to forcibly take a knife she was using. She told the court she was pregnant and feared that Moyo would overpower her and stab her.

“I quickly jerked my arms from the deceased’s grip and stabbed him once on the left side of the chest,” she said. The matter was held in camera with only relatives of the juvenile allowed in court.

Prosecuting, Tafadzwa Mupariwa, told the court that on August 11, last year around 8AM the juvenile and her brother-in-law were at their homestead under Chief Ntambeni in Silobela.

He said: “An altercation ensued between the accused and the deceased, culminating in the accused stabbing the deceased once with a kitchen knife on the left side of the chest. The deceased walked out of the hut and fell to the ground. He died instantly.”

The court heard that the teenager came out of the kitchen hut still holding the knife and neighbours apprehended her.

A report was made Mupariwa said, leading to the arrest of the juvenile.
