A 17-YEAR-OLD boy who allegedly killed his grandmother in Bulawayo’s Lobengula West suburb, has appeared in court facing a murder charge.

The juvenile was not asked to plead when he briefly appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Sibongile Msipa Marondedze on Friday.

He was remanded in custody to August 28 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecuting, Maria John said last week on Wednesday, the teenager had a misunderstanding with his grandmother. The nature of their differences was not disclosed in court.

John said the boy pushed the grandmother and she fell, hitting her head on the corner of the dressing table.

She bled from the right ear due to the impact, the court heard.

“The now deceased then fell on the bed, and a lit candle fell on the bed, igniting a mosquito net and a blanket,” said John.

She said the bedroom was engulfed in flames and she was burnt to death. It was not stated in court, whether or not, the boy took any action to try to save his grandmother from the inferno.

Two weeks ago, another 17 year old boy from Pumula South suburb in Bulawayo allegedly killed his aunt in cold blood after she reprimanded him for keeping pornographic material in his cellphone.

The Form Three pupil allegedly stabbed his aunt on the left cheek and underneath the left eye with a kitchen knife before attempting to conceal the murder by ransacking the house and lying to neighbours that they had been attacked.
