DANILLE Bekker will be looking forward to winning her third National Aids Council-sponsored Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Open title when the tournament tees off at Royal Harare this morning.
The 19-year-old Chapman Golf Club-based golfer has been in fine form and is expected to battle it out with several local and international players. Bekker won her first tournament in 2018 before the sport was put on hold because of the Covid-19. She again won last year’s tournament at Royal Harare and had managed to dominate both in junior and senior tournaments.
The teen star will, however, have to face competition from several other players like seasoned Yolandar Mubaiwa, in-form Margaret Nyamukondiwa, Primross Chikwaya, Tracy Humbira, Kudzi Mandava Wadzanai Kwaririma Rumbidzai Chisango among several others.
Players like Miriam Masiya, who was recently in South Africa, are likely to feature prominently. “We are expecting a field of 120 women golfers from all the provinces. We have those golfers from Zambia and Kenya who will play in the strokeplay format.
“We are very confident that we will have a successful tournament considering that we have a full field,” said Vera.
NAC are the main sponsors of the tournament and will be complemented by other corporates. The Championship and A division will play 54 holes and battle over three days while the B and C divisions will play 36 holes from tomorrow and Sunday.
