NAIROBI. — Kenya’s mobile network providers say they are fully complying with government’s directive to register all subscribers.
The four network operators, comprising Safaricom, Airtel, YuMobile and Telkom, indicated that contrary to reports, they were fully co-operating with the Communications Commission of Kenya.
Earlier this week, CCK, the local communications regulator, accused local mobile companies of failing to implement the new law which stipulates that network providers should to cut off all unregistered customers from using their respective networks. The firms denied such accusations.
Despite the denials, the regulator maintained that more than 600 000 mobile subscribers across the country were unregistered.
Addressing journalists, the four companies said they had complied with the directive from CCK saying they look forward to the implementation of the law in its totality.
Safaricom director of corporate affairs Nzioka Waita said he was however concerned about manner in which the matter was handled in the public domain where the local mobile were accused of being less cooperative.
“We are in full compliance with the law and will continue working together with the various regulators and law enforcement agencies in the execution of their public duty.
“All four operators have gone over and above what is required by law by adhering to the international standards of mobile security systems. As licensed operators, we maintain daily engagement with our regulators and are always available for open dialogue,” Waita said.
The four mobile networks’ response to the national regulator comes days after the police, in conjunction with CCK, had called for criminal charges to be laid on the telcos for failing to comply with SIM card registrations. — CAJ News.
