TELONE is on a drive to plant more than 50 000 trees throughout the country as part of measures to combat effects of climate change.

Speaking at the handover ceremony of 2 030 trees to the Bulawayo City Council at Centenary Park last Friday, TelOne Bulawayo regional business head, Mr Wing Sibanda said the telecommunications company was committed to restoring the environment through tree planting .

“We are planting more than 50 000 trees throughout the country. We are coming to the party to assist the environment, taking note that trees are affected by a number of things as communities develop. Trees are lost in the process and we are trying to counter that through our plant a tree initiative,” said Mr Sibanda.

The country commemorates tree planting day the first Saturday of December.

The theme for this year’s commemorations is “Fruit trees for security and nutrition.”

The focus tree this year is umbumbulu also known as muchechete, Redmilkwood or Mimusops.

Meanwhile, BCC also received a donation of 10 litter bins from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo expressed gratitude for the donations.

He said the city was striving to keep Bulawayo clean and improve environmental management as it regains its status as the cleanest city in the country.

“The maintenance of our city is an important part of the city’s service provision policy. Everyone has a role to play in achieving a clean Bulawayo and I am pleased that ZETDC has seen it fit to contribute to a clean Bulawayo,” said Cllr Moyo.

“Environmentally, trees help protect our ozone layer which is crucial in the fight against climate change. Bulawayo has a beautiful climate, may we please maintain it. The next few weeks we will be planting trees along different roads such as Matopos Road and Airport Road among others.”
