Tembo calls for unity & continuity in Warriors squad

NEWLY appointed Warriors interim head coach Kaitano Tembo has placed unity, commitment and continuity at the centre of his leadership message as he prepares to guide Zimbabwe into a crucial new chapter.

Tembo, who takes over from Marian Marinica following his sudden departure on Monday, assumes the role at a defining moment for the senior national team, with the Warriors gearing up for the upcoming Unity Cup in London.

For Tembo, the appointment is both an honour and a responsibility, but rather than signalling a complete overhaul, the former Warriors defender is determined to preserve momentum and build on the structures already in place.

“It is a great honour and responsibility. I want to thank Zifa for the trust they have shown in me. Having worked within the national team set-up, I understand the expectations and the pride that comes with leading the Warriors,” Tembo said.

“I am fully committed to serving the country and building on the work that has already been done.”
Having served as assistant under both Marinica and Michael Nees, Tembo believes his familiarity with the squad, systems and internal culture offers Zimbabwe an important advantage during this transitional period.

“Continuity is very important. I have worked closely with Coach Marian Marinica and previously with Michael Nees, alongside Takesure Chiragwi. That understanding of the players, the systems and the culture within the team gives us a solid foundation to move forward without disruption,” he said.

Tembo will work alongside assistant coach Takesure Chiragwi, a partnership he says is built on trust, shared understanding and a common vision for the national team.

“It is very important. We have worked together before and there is mutual understanding and respect. That cohesion in the technical team allows us to focus on the bigger picture, which is preparing the players and ensuring the team performs at its best,” said Tembo.

But beyond tactical preparation, Tembo’s strongest message has been directed squarely at the players, a call for collective purpose whenever they wear national colours.

“Unity and commitment. When players come into the national team, it is about representing the nation. We need to work together, support each other and give everything on the pitch. That spirit is what defines the Warriors,” he said.

His emphasis on togetherness comes as Zimbabwe seeks to maximise a squad drawn from diverse football environments, including the domestic Premiership, South Africa and Europe. Tembo believes Zimbabwe’s strength lies not only in individual talent, but in moulding those players into one committed unit.

“We have a good mix of talent. There is quality in the local league, strong players based in South Africa, and others playing in the UK and beyond. Our task is to bring them together, build unity and create a team that plays with purpose and pride,” he said.

The Unity Cup will also mark the Warriors’ first appearance on UK soil, adding another layer of significance to the tournament. Zimbabwe opens its campaign with a semi-final clash against continental heavyweights Nigeria, a test Tembo is embracing with ambition and realism.

“Nigeria is a top side with quality players, so we respect them. But at the same time, we believe in our squad. Preparation will be key, organisation, discipline and making sure the players understand their roles. It’s an opportunity for us to compete and showcase our strength,” he said.
