Zimdancehall DJ Templeman, also known as “The Godfatha”, held his 35th birthday party at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex over the weekend, drawing hundreds of fans and artistes to the bash.Dubbed the “Earthday Bash”, the occasion saw the giant venue filled to capacity as people braved the rains to wish the dancehall icon happy returns.
Artistes like Qounfuzed, Softaz, AGL, Lady Squanda, Angel P, Ricky Fire, Sniper Storm, Jay Cee and the Mbare crew of Seh Calaz and Kinna kept the crowd entertained till early Sunday morning.
The event also gave the opportunity for upcoming chanters to show their stuff, and notable performances came from Junior Fire, Ninja P, Tiva Stylez, Tocky Vibez and young singer Genius, who once again proved that Zimdancehall is a growing force.
Templeman arrived to rapturous applause with accompanying music by DJs including Mighty Ducks, Deff House, Black Spyder Crew with Selekta Smallz rocking the microphone.
Several artistes introduced new songs, such as Ricky Fire’s “Paita Nyoka muChitungwiza”, Sniper Storm’s “Wese Anonzi Musikana”, and duets from Lady Squanda and Softaz. However, the ugly face of hooliganism reared its head as some fans threw missiles on stage when their demands were not met by the DJs, sending artistes scurrying for cover as bottles rained on stage.
This action seems to justify Chipaz Promotions’ decision to erect a wire fence in front of the stage at a show in Harare Gardens as a means of protecting performers from unpredictable crowds.
Despite this, the show was generally one to remember for the right reasons, with birthday boy Templeman thanking fans and artistes for making it to the venue despite the rains. “Thank you all for wishing me a happy Earthday and continuing to support Zimdancehall throughout 2013 and I look forward to an even more prosperous 2014 for everyone who is involved in the music industry.”
