Nigerian superstar Tems has officially crossed one of the rarest thresholds in music history.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified “Wait For U”, her smash collaboration with Future and Drake, at 11x Platinum, marking over 11 million units sold and streamed in the United States.
“Rolling Stone Africa” congratulated Tems on adding another landmark achievement to her growing legacy, highlighting her breakthrough moment as a monumental leap for African music on the global stage.
With this monumental milestone, officially locked in on July 16, Temilade Openiyi becomes the first female African artist to secure a US Diamond single.
She now joins Afrobeats icon Wizkid (who earned his Diamond plaque via Drake’s 2016 hit “One Dance” as the only two African visionaries to surpass 10 million-plus sales in America. Notably, global superstar Drake serves as the common denominator, anchoring both historic cross-continental anthems.
“Wait For U” isn’t just an industry juggernaut; it is a masterclass in soul-stirring storytelling that completely took over pop culture. Produced by ATL Jacob and FNZ, the track’s hypnotic foundation is built around a pitched-up sample of Tems’ own 2020 solo song, “Higher”.
