A HARARE tenant has appeared in court on allegations of damaging property worth US$1 500 before vacating a rented house without notifying the landlord.

Michelle Davina Freemantle (40) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Lynne Chinzou, facing a charge of negligence and causing serious property damage.

She was remanded in custody pending a bail application today.

The complainant is Admire Mupanduki, her former landlord.

Prosecutor Ms Kanchelskis Ropi told the court that between January 1 and May 2, 2026, Freemantle was renting a house from Mupanduki under a lease agreement.

It is alleged that Freemantle caused extensive damage to property.

She reportedly vacated the premises without informing the landlord.

The court heard that Mupanduki was alerted by neighbours that the accused had moved out.

Upon visiting the property, he discovered that she had indeed left.

A subsequent inspection allegedly revealed damage to several parts of the house, including windows, doors, glass panes, locks and electrical fittings.

The total value of the damaged property is estimated at US$1 500.

A police report was filed, leading to Freemantle’s arrest.
