CRINGEY Canada manager Jesse Marsch was in no mood for cameras after his team’s World Cup exit.
But Marsch claimed the Canadians were the better team despite their 3-0 loss to Morocco. Canada’s World Cup came to a crashing halt in Houston on Saturday afternoon. They were undone by three goals in the second half as Morocco booked a spot in the quarter-finals.
After the game, Marsch was seen theatrically shooing away the cameras as they tried to close in on him.
That came after he was spotted bizarrely high-fiving miserable substitutes and coaches on the bench after Morocco’s third goal rubbed his sides’ noses in the dirt in injury time. Then, in his post-match interview, the Canada boss followed it all up with some equally baffling claims.
“What a privilege our fans have had, to root a team on like this,” Marsch said.
“A team that goes after the game, that doesn’t play defensive, that shows that they can be better.
“Of course we have to be in these situations more and more, and then we have to find ways to succeed and we have build from that. I’d rather be us than them, as good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us.
“We had 11 incredible performances in the first half. We were unlucky not to get the lead, we should have had the lead, and then it’s the fine details.
“They [Morocco] have quality, players that play at a big level. But in terms of how we played, what an incredible performance.”
Canada failed to make it out of the group stage in their previous two World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022.
Marsch led them to a knockout round win against South Africa and Canada’s best ever World Cup showing. He said: “I’m really proud of our guys, we went after the game, they’re hurting right now, but my goodness, right now I couldn’t be prouder.
“It’s about in the biggest games, in the biggest moments, how much can we be ourselves, how much can we show belief, how much can we test the opponent.”— Sun
