“THE AFTERMATH”, the latest production by the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre, presents a heart-wrenching story.
The production was premièred, to critical acclaim, at several venues across the country.
Written by Mphepo — a multiple-award winner for stage performance, theatre production, and film and television production — the play is about two university students who are in love. Later in their relationship, the girl falls pregnant and the two lovebirds decide to abort. The abortion goes wrong and the girl dies as a result.
The death triggers disagreements and serious disputes within the girl’s family.
His script delves into sensitive social issues like the family, religion and abortion rights, sparking critical conversations and challenging societal norms.
The lead actor is Mphepo himself. The other cast members are Farirai Clarence Borerwe; Shingirai Manyengavana; Henry Mutekede; and Munashe Goromonzi, who acts as both the girl and the girl’s mother.
Launched in Harare in May, the play was recently premièred at Mutare’s Courtauld Theatre and also at the Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo.
Mphepo said the play was well-received, mostly by students at university and other tertiary institutions.
“More than 900 students braved the chilly weather and watched us perform at Masvingo Teachers’ College. We got standing ovations from Mutare residents and we are still getting positive feedback,” said the thespian.
He explained why the shows were held free of charge.
“The shows were part of our audience-building exercise. I am happy to say that we managed to achieve the intended goals.”
Yesterday (Saturday), Mphepo and his crew rounded up the national tour with a performance at the Bulawayo Theatre.
