Dr Nick Ohizu-The Voice of God
One of the reasons a lot of people struggle with coming back to God is because of “The Big Brother Syndrome”.
It can be defined as the negative and holier than thou attitude portrayed by the home boys in the kingdom of God.
When I say the home boys, I am talking about the children of God who have been in church and in the kingdom for their entire lives, never left, never sinned and never disobeyed God.
They own the church and as well own God.
They behave in such a way that anyone with an atom of sin trembles in their presence.
Their pious nature shatters people’s confidence and leave them with a perception that they do not deserve any mercy and acceptance from God.
However, the big brothers are not God.
They no do not own God neither do that have any control over His decisions to bless.
God’s choices will always leave a lot of people confused because I am still in awe of how He actually chose me because I know very well that I was among the prodigals.
The big brothers are not and will never be given the authority to decide who gets forgiven, blessed and promoted.
If they did, a lot of people will not survive their backslidden days.
God is not man that He would lie, because the decision to forgive and restore returning sons belongs to God and him only, we’ve lived to see the mercy of God overflow to many whom men would have written off and today, the kingdom is basking in the glory of their restoration.
Who are the big brothers and how do we identify them?
“Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. So, he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’ “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore, his father came out and pleaded with him. So, he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’[Luke 15:25-30 NKJV]
They are always in the field: In as much as there is nothing wrong with commitment to the work of God, we must understand that God wants us to rest.
There are servants of God who do the work of God at the detriment of their health and family.
These are people who have spouses and children but they are always on the mountain praying, always fasting, always in church and always evangelising.
All these kingdom assignments are commendable but they should not be prioritised over the welfare of the family.
Your family is your first ministry therefore urgent attention must be given to them.
When we relegate important family events for the sake of the kingdom assignments, spouses and children will rebel against church with the conclusion that church took the parents or spouse away from them.
Do the work of God but never overlook your family. We might be going to heaven but we first need to live on earth.
They have a problem with music and dancing: You realised that the big brother never entered the house but called out a servant because he heard music and dancing.
This a message to the church and different denominational beliefs that we profess.
Some will sing hymns, some will play drums, some will blow trumpets, some will dance, some will clap hands, some will wear uniforms, others will wear jeans, some will put on make-up, some will cover their hair others won’t cover their hair, some will ask people to give others will not preach about seed or tithe.
Whatever you profess should not give you a reason to judge others. Our God is a progressive God.
What was not acceptable today, might be acceptable tomorrow.
When God is in the house, anything is possible. It is possible for Christians to have a Holy Ghost party without sin.
Let big brothers understand that we are pastoring a new generation that loves music and God loves celebration. The two will come together to bring a great worship to God
They are angry when God blesses others: One thing we must understand about God is that his sovereignty over the affairs of men is not by democracy. God does not seek the permission of your brother or friends to bless you.
If he did, most of us will not receive anything from God.
The problem with man is that we always look at the outward appearance while God looks at the heart.
Never be jealous about another’s blessing but rather rejoice with them that rejoice. If you become angry with God, you will not receive from Him.
The big brothers complain about what they were not given yet they are the ones that never asked.
Some people criticise us for preaching and praying for prosperity and then turn around and get angry with us for being blessed.
It is not our fault that God chose to bless us.
The good thing is that God is still in the business of blessing people.
If you ask Him, He will bless you.
