The Boilermaker

NOT many people fancy mixing alcohol, especially those that prefer beer or lagers to anything else. A few weeks ago I celebrated my birthday and had a belated drink with a couple of my friends.
We decided to have an outdoor drink up, where we could enjoy a cool breeze under some shade. So we ordered what is known as a beer tower. A beer tower is more of a container that stores and cools beer for consumption on the go. It can serve up to four people.

On that particular day it was just my two friends and myself who went on a drinking spree. After two towers we felt far from tipsy and I decided to gear up. This is when I asked my buddies if they had ever tried what is called a boilermaker.

It’s essentially a pint of beer mixed with whiskey or a shot of whatever you prefer. I requested the barman to fill up our tower and add two thimblefuls of vodka. This is when it got exciting. One by one we both left our seats without telling each other where the other was headed to. It was the first guy who vanished first then the other.

There I was trying to be a hero with half a tower, full of a concocted brew. After a few more sips I felt its impact and decided to make my way home.

Anyway, the point of my short tale is that the boilermaker is an easy way to get intoxicated and in my opinion is easy on the pocket but with repercussions in its results. Today, unsurprisingly, it’s a popular shift-drink for bartenders and anyone else who needs that one-two punch after a long day.

Based on what the pros have told me, there’s no single right way to drink a boilermaker. The boilermaker is arguably the simplest cocktail in the world, if you even call it a cocktail.

For the longest time, the concept of a boilermaker confused me. There are different methods of taking it.
It’s either you pour a pint of your favourite inebriator and drop a shot glass into the beer glass or mug then gulp it all down.

Then the other concept is to take a shot then sip on your beer? But I really think a boilermaker is essentially meant to be taken in one go.
