SOUTH AFRICA-BASED filmmaker Shyie Mzinja (pictured right) has released a new film titled “The Bond”, which deals with xenophobia.
The Zimbabwean-born artiste — real name Sibusisiwe Mzinja — was moved by rising cases of xenophobic attacks in Mzansi.
In one of the most disturbing cases, 43-year-old Elvis Nyathi was last year killed and burnt to ashes in a mob attack in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.
“The film’s major objective is to show the strong bond between Zimbabwe and South Africa, including other African countries. We have many people, among them professionals, working in South Africa, a situation that is benefitting their economy,” Mzinja told The Sunday Mail Society.
“Thus, it is not proper to see any South African national attacking a Zimbabwean, or any other African. We are one and should not fight, no matter our differences.”
Born and bred in Gweru, the filmmaker reckons that Africans should learn to co-exist.
“I was born in Zimbabwe and have never witnessed any foreigners being victimised or ill-treated.
“It is my hope that ‘The Bond’ will spread the message of love. We must treat each other well all the time despite our different nationalities.”
The 31-year-old said she was pleased with the positive rave reviews the production has received in South Africa.
“The media and several other organisations have been welcoming and supportive. I think the movie will go viral, judging from the positive feedback it is getting. Xenophobia is a disturbing issue that needs to be addressed.”
Mzinja has been actively involved in the film industry since 2009.
Currently, she has four productions under her belt, which mainly focus on romance.
However, she decided to break new ground with her latest project.
“So many filmmakers turn a blind eye on crucial issues in favour of traditional themes.
“I want to take this time to encourage my colleagues to address burning issues in society so that we help improve our communities,” she said.
The film is now available on Netflix and will soon be officially premièred in Zimbabwe.
