THE story of Highlanders FC begins in the 19th century with the Scottish missionary and explorer Reverend Robert Moffat. During his expeditions, he encountered the great King Mzilikazi and his Matabele warriors. In awe of their appearance, he noted in his diary:
“The appearance of these men was much like the dress of a regiment of Scottish Highlanders; a great number of strings and strips of skin with the fur twisted, hung like a kilt round the middle, reaching to the knees.”
Fast forward to 1926: King Mzilikazi’s great-grandsons, Albert and Rhodes, found themselves bored while visiting from their Cape base. In their idle moments, they decided to form a football team called Lions, which would eventually transform into Matabeleland Highlanders in 1937.
As we approach this grand milestone of 100 years, we will pay tribute to and profile 100 personalities who have made notable contributions to the club’s rich legacy. This list will encompass various sectors, including players, administrators, benefactors, coaches, and dedicated fans.

At number 100, we begin by honouring the founding fathers of the club: Prince Rhodes and Prince Albert Khumalo. These two remarkable individuals are the sons of King Lobengula’s heir apparent, Prince Njube.
Born and raised in the Cape after Cecil John Rhodes took their father to the Cape following the fall of the Matabele monarchy, it was in the Cape that the princes were exposed to Western education and sports. During their visits to the country, they introduced the sport to their kin.
Legend has it that the initial funds raised to establish the club were sourced from diamonds, not just any diamonds, but those believed to be taken by Prince Rhodes from their grandfather King Lobengula’s “grave” in Pashu.

This account is also mentioned by Nsele Nhlabangana and Ndebele historian Pathisa Nyathi in his 2015 account of the club’s history. This poignant story adds a layer of depth to the club’s origins, symbolising both wealth and the enduring spirit of the Highlanders family. It reflects a profound connection to their heritage, where even the most sacred places contributed to the legacy of the club.
Prince Rhodes and Prince Albert Khumalo’s contributions to Highlanders FC’s formation have left a lasting legacy that led to the empowerment of the African community through sports and the promotion of unity and social cohesion.
The two royals established a proud football tradition, and today, Highlanders FC remains one of Zimbabwe’s top football clubs, with a loyal fan base and a rich history.
As we embark on this incredible journey to celebrate 100 years of Highlanders, we invite you to join us in honouring the individuals who have shaped this iconic club. Their stories, contributions, and legacies are intertwined with the fabric of our history, and together, they create the vibrant mosaic that is Highlanders.
