IT is said that cooking is an important part of a healthy relationship and women across the divide have a history of preparing sumptuous meals that any man would literally die for.
But there are men who are also breaking down long-held stereotypes; they are good at cooking just like any female.
For these men, cooking helps change society’s negative view of them and how they maximise their relationships.
One such man is Austen Moyo, the name may not sound familiar in most social circles but surely is profound in Bulawayo’s culinary and catering business…
Popularly known as “Malume”, Austen has over the years turned into a household name especially at funerals, weddings and corporate events, where he renders his spicy services and delights clients as a chef.
With little introduction needed, his gigantic body stature attracts much attention every time he steps into a room.
Standing at approximately two metres tall and weighing 130kgs, Malume, proudly hung his professional cap in the education sector and took up a hobby — cooking that has seen him travel across the country and has been a great source of livelihood.
“Cooking is a great way to bond with your loved ones. Utilising cooking as an art form to share your culture and heritage, as well as showcase your skills in the kitchen, is an integral part of any strong relationship. Cooking becomes a crucial cornerstone for nourishing families and it is one of the best ways to show how much you care about them,” said Malume.
A teacher by profession Malume said he established his own home-based deco and catering company — Aussie Catering and Hire Services (ACHC).
At the ripe old age of 58, most would consider retiring but not for this gentle giant. A self-taught cook, Malume has managed to amass a nationwide client base and hopes to establish beyond the borders.
“I worked in the education sector for years. I hung my coat because I lost my passion and decided to pursue something that started as a hobby but turned into what I really should have followed from the onset. I love cooking, I love tasting new foods and sampling new foods. Not just tasting them but I also enjoy cooking them and adding a bit of my touch to turn the dishes into signature meals,” said Austen.
Born in Mzilikazi, Malume possesses a warm heart and is quite a popular figure especially among children.
“My catering company has assisted me a lot. I have evolved from the man I was back when I was in the education sector. I believe in following dreams and not being held back by profession. I have even grown the number of friends I have and I am happy all the time because I work at my own time and report to myself,” said Malume.
“I thank God for taking care of me up until this age. It is not many people that make it to this age and manage to accomplish the little that I have.”
He said in order to be successful in whatever business endeavour God should be at the forefront.
“It is important to have a relationship with God. Make the best of your life and never have regrets. Live a healthy life, by so doing knowing what is good for your body. Do not abuse substances. Most of all have a good diet and be positive about life,” said Malume.
