The glory shall be your rear guard

“Then your light will break forth like the dawn and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” — Isaiah 58:8

Iwant to speak to someone who is stepping into a new season yet still looking over their shoulder.

You might be worried about what you left behind, who is talking behind your back or whether your past will eventually catch up with you. However, your future is set before you and God’s glory is behind you.

When God brings you into a new season, He never leaves you vulnerable during the transition. He does not simply open the front door while leaving the back door open for the enemy to attack. God is a God of complete coverage.

In the days of ancient Israel, when an army was on the move, they utilised a vanguard and a rear guard.  The vanguard went before the army to clear the road, remove obstacles and ensure the way was safe.  Meanwhile, the rear guard served as the strongest part of the formation.

Their job was not to look forward but to look backward. They protected the vulnerable, the children and the baggage, making sure no enemy could launch a surprise attack from behind and that no straggler would be dragged back to where they started. God says, “I will not merely give you an angel to be your rear guard; I will give you My own glory.” The greatest picture of this dynamic is found in Exodus chapter 14.

Israel had just come out of Egypt, facing the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh’s chariots behind them. They were trapped in a state of transition — having left slavery but not yet fully experiencing the fullness of freedom.

The Bible records that the angel of God, who usually went before Israel, moved and went behind them.  The pillar of cloud shifted from the front and stood behind them, positioning itself between the camp of Israel and the Egyptians. While the people panicked over the waters ahead, God moved to handle the enemy pressing in from behind.

Some of you are urgently praying about what is in front of you — your finances, your family or your next steps.

Yet God is already actively dealing with what is behind you.

He is dismantling the generational curses that have followed your family, neutralising the spirit of failure that has chased you and silencing the voices of those who said you would never rise again. Many of us live in deep fear of our history, mistakenly believing that our past mistakes, broken relationships and former shortcomings will disqualify our future.

However, when the glory of God becomes your rear guard, your past is not merely protected; it is swallowed up entirely by His radiant presence. This is precisely why God does not use an ordinary soldier for this task.

When angels protect you, the enemy can still perceive you. But when God’s glory covers you, the enemy no longer sees you — he sees God.  Your adversaries will look for you in your past and all they will encounter is the consuming fire of His presence.

Many of us have endured painful transitions, such as collapsed businesses, lost years and missed opportunities.

The enemy relentlessly pressures you to keep looking backward and to live paralysed by regret.  Yet God is declaring to you today: stop looking back, stop trying to fight battles I have already covered and stop trying to answer the critics who walked away.

Let My glory answer on your behalf.

When God becomes your rear guard, three transformative things happen.

First, what you cannot see is securely guarded, because while you cannot watch your own back, God can.

Second, what is precious to you is preserved — your life, your health and your reputation.

Third, you are kept from sliding backward, because the very same glory that pushes you forward is the wall that prevents Pharaoh from dragging you back to Egypt.

Let this declaration become your spiritual reality this week.  Declare wherever you are: “My future is before me and God’s glory is behind me. I am covered in front and I am covered behind. I will not be ambushed and my past will not overtake me. I enter my new season fully protected.”

May the glory of the Lord be your rear guard from this day forward, in the name of Jesus.
