The military, people are one

Teddie Bepete
I take this moment, in connection with what is happening in our beloved country, to recall two articles that I penned this past winter.
I am not referring to these pieces as a matter of revision, but to confirm certain inescapable realities that at the time were taken for granted by those who should have benefited from the unexpected constructive counsel. take this moment, in connection with what is happening in our beloved country, to recall two articles that I penned this past winter.

One of the articles, “Prof Moyo: Threat to President Mugabe’s legacy”, tried as hard as possible to warn the President about Moyo’s evil machinations and how he was going to be detrimental to the President’s legacy.

Many in Zanu-PF have acknowledged the disastrous influence of Prof Moyo and other members of his cabal on President Mugabe’s rule.

But this came belatedly; after the damage had already been done.

This good counsel was inevitably ignored and the First Family who should have benefited from it continued to ironically condone the moles’ evil.

The other article entitled, “There is a Jonah in the boat”, categorically assured the world that the country’s military establishment would eventually get involved as a prime factor in the imminent transition from Mugabeism to the much-awaited democratisation.

I argued that, “Without the military, there can be no country.”

I had to take pains to explain to the world that the nation’s military had a critical role to play in as far as restoration of the liberation struggle’s ideals is concerned.

Lest we forget, the Zimbabwe Defence Force is a product of the national liberation struggle.

It has always been made up of political soldiers, men and women who were initially taught to guard their national heritage jealously.

The ethos of the struggle was ingrained in them so much that the conscience of the land is still in them today.

Zanla and Zipra forces, as liberation armies, were a product of political problems emanating from colonial bondage.

Zimbabwe is a country born out of the barrel of the gun.

It is the military who are the custodians of the Zimbabwean State, its founding virtues and its guiding ideology.

Of course, there are many ways that lead to the same destination, but nations that have arrived at modernity have always prioritised their military.

Europe was able to dominate Africa politically and economically because it assuredly militarised ahead of us.

It is shocking that certain ministers and party leaders were able to manipulate Ex-President Mugabe to the extent that he publicly denounced his own army.

Zimbabwe’s army has always been an integral part of the national community.

In the past, the army has taken part in civil and humanitarian events.

The international standing of our security forces goes beyond magnitudes.

Our soldiers made history when they captured the notorious Bakara weapons market in an attempt to bring peace to Somalia; not to mention their commendable involvement in the Mozambique and Congo civil wars.

Zimbabwe can never descend into civil strife because our army has a unique understanding of the necessity of peace by virtue of its years of experience in United Nations peace-keeping missions across the world.

Our soldiers have been lauded worldwide for good conduct.

The courage of our generals has been hailed by everyone in and outside the country.

Our liberation war heroes have finally cast away the band of rogues who threatened to destroy everything that Cde Mugabe stood for over all those decades.
