The perfect outfits to wear on Christmas Day

Fashion 263 Correspondent

Christmas Day looks different for everyone: From dressing up to the nines and heading out, hosting at home, to staying in PJs from dawn ‘til dessert. From glam party dresses to cosy-but-still-cute loungewear, we’ve got your Christmas Day outfit all wrapped up.

After having got through all the festive parties, which can kick off as early as October, the big question of what to wear on Christmas Day can be tricky.

Perhaps you’ve already exhausted all your red, gold, velvet and sequinned looks. Depending on your family’s traditions, Christmas Day might also require more than one outfit.

Your Christmas Day ensemble will really depend on the plan for the day. For a relaxed, low-key celebration, you could easily stay in simply layer on an apron if cooking. Alternatively, embrace louche lounge pieces, throwing on a puffer for the traditional Christmas walk.

For a more formal Christmas lunch, a festive day dress is your best bet — bonus points if it’s secretly crafted from a stretchy knit. If your plans involve parties you can rely on the tried-and-trusted combination of a little black dress and a perfect pair of boots.

For black-tie events, however, nothing less than floor-length sparkles.

 Christmas Day morning

There’s nothing quite like Christmas morning. The sound of scurrying footsteps and excited cries of “has he been?”; a bulging stocking at the foot of the bed or mantelpiece; the Christmas tree with gifts tumbling out from beneath it … this level of excitement demands an outfit to match.

The classic button-down silhouette is comfortable enough to sleep in yet can be easily dressed up with a slick of lipstick and kitten heels.

 The Christmas Day walk

The Christmas Day walk, while not a universal tradition, is highly recommended. Not only does it offer a welcome break from Christmas TV and a chance to walk off those extra mince pies, it’s also the perfect occasion to showcase your best new outerwear.

 Christmas Day dinner

When Christmas dinner is served, whether at midday or in the late afternoon, you’ll want to dress for the occasion. With so many choices, it might be more helpful to consider what to avoid — a bell sleeve, for example, is almost guaranteed to dip into a neighbouring guest’s gravy as you reach for the Brussels sprouts.

A day dress remains a reliable and stylish option and Oscar de la Renta’s festive knitted style has just the right amount of stretch for Christmas Day.

 Black-tie attire

Don’t let the black-tie dress code overwhelm you this Christmas. Instead of stressing, embrace a “more is more” philosophy. Sequins? Absolutely. Gold? Definitely. Diamonds? Without a doubt.

 The Christmas party

A little black dress will be your best friend throughout the Christmas season. Valentino’s mini is beautifully festive, featuring a ruffled satin hem and an Eighties-inspired velvet bow. To balance the feminine flourishes, style yours with statement power boots and complete the look with a metallic accent, such as Bottega’s gold mini bag.

The embellished maxi dress

Few pieces combine impact with ease quite like a long-sleeved evening maxi dress. Choose something with polished embellishment and it requires little in the way of styling. Opulent velvet — such as Rabanne’s navy ruched design — delivers instant sophistication, with a sprinkling of festive spirit that feels fitting as the nights draw in. Follow Heather Kaminetsky’s lead and style yours with crystal chandelier earrings, also by Rabanne, then slip into classic black heeled pumps like Paris Texas’s slingback ‘Lidia’ design. Elsewhere in the collection, an eyelet-embellished style in classic black jersey features gleaming silver hardware that strikes the perfect after-dark note.

After-dark denim

When it comes to evening style, sometimes less really is more. Model Jean Campbell elevates the classic ‘jeans and a nice top’ formula with Rabanne’s button-detail gathered jersey top.

In vivid red and studded with silver snaps, its subtly shimmering texture makes it perfect for cocktails — especially when paired with the brand’s statement crystal earrings. Straight-leg jeans ground the look style is an excellent choice.

Keep footwear simple with a classic pair of heeled pumps. — fashionstatementchristmas
