Affable theatre for development practitioner Daniel Maposa has committed to using the arts to raise awareness about climate change in 2025.
In simpler terms, climate change refers to significant long-term variations in average weather conditions, such as becoming warmer, wetter, or drier over several decades.
This pressing issue has captured the attention of global leaders, weather experts, and researchers who are collaborating to avert potential dangers.
In an interview, Maposa, representing Savanna Trust, expressed optimism for 2025, stating, “This year promises to be another impactful one for Savanna Trust,” he said.
“Through theatre for development, our team aims to foster meaningful community engagement across various projects.”
He explained that Savanna Trust will focus on climate change initiatives in 2025, with theatre for development (TFD) performances scheduled to be rolled out in different regions throughout Zimbabwe.
As a seasoned theatre director, actor, and scriptwriter, Maposa also revealed some upcoming projects.
“The year has begun on a high note, with the resumption of the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Harassment, and Abuse (PSEAH) country tour to the Midlands, Bulawayo, and Matabeleland East Provinces,” he said.
“The overall goal of this project is to combat sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment in workplaces, communities, and homes.”
He emphasised that youth engagement is a key focus for Savanna Trust.
“We are particularly targeting young people in Zimbabwe, especially in areas like Binga, Kadoma, and Hwedza, where these issues are prevalent.”
Maposa also aims to use theatre to educate the public about the Constitution.
“It is crucial for people to understand their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the Constitution.
“This project will be implemented in Chipinge, Hopley, Bulawayo, and Binga, using theatre to raise awareness and facilitate dialogue on constitutional issues.”
Additionally, Savanna Trust plans to produce two full-length plays to be performed at various theatre venues.
Maposa reassured theatre lovers that his organisation is dedicated to reviving theatre at the grassroots level.
“The organisation will continue its capacity-building programs to train theatre groups in arts and culture management,” he said.
“This initiative seeks to equip theatre makers and creatives with the knowledge and skills necessary to professionalise their work for sustainability.”
