FRIDAY evening’s performance of Asante Mo and Siyaya in Concert at the Bulawayo Theatre has been postponed following the tragic death of its invited guest, Hon. Desire “Moyoxide” Moyo.
The announcement comes amid widespread mourning after Moyo, a well-known poet, arts organiser and legislator for Nkulumane, died in a road accident early on Friday morning.
The production team behind 50 Dates at the Theatre released a statement confirming the postponement:
“We regret to announce that tonight’s scheduled performance of Asante Mo and Siyaya in Concert has been postponed following the untimely passing of Hon. Desire Moyo, affectionately known as Moyoxide. Hon. Moyo was more than a supporter of the arts; he was a voice for the creative community, a mentor to many, and a friend of the theatre.
His guidance and encouragement helped shape many artistic paths, including our own.
“In recognition of his life and work, we will pause tonight’s performance and stand with fellow artists in mourning and remembrance.
New dates for the show will be announced shortly.
We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues in the arts, and all who were moved by his work and presence. May he rest in peace.”
Moyo, aged 45, died at the scene when the vehicle in which he was travelling to Bulawayo crashed into an elephant near Shangani in the early hours of Friday.
His death, occurring just a day before what would have been his 46th birthday, has deeply affected Zimbabwe’s creative community, with many describing the loss as immeasurable.
News of his passing prompted an immediate outpouring of tributes, with friends, colleagues and admirers remembering him as a committed advocate for the arts, a generous mentor and a loyal friend whose energy and dedication inspired many.
The 50 Dates at the Theatre team has joined the wider community in mourning. Mourners are gathering at House Number 11732, Nkulumane 11, Bulawayo.
New dates for the postponed concert will be confirmed in the coming days. The stage remains dark tonight, in memory of one of Zimbabwe’s most respected voices in the arts.
